Extract for Symposium on Global Governance

MohamedFaisal, Ambassador of Maldives

Abstraxt: The 21st century brings with it much hope for a system ofglobal governance built on mutual trust and global cooperation.  For seven decades we have worked under asystem of international governance that have dictated and promoted how nationsshould work with one another.  The 70years has also been a period of relative peace, although we have seen conflictsacross the world. It is important at this stage to take stock and look back atthose 70 years of global governance. It is imperative that we breath new lifeinto a system that has to evolve with time, and which is attuned to therealities of the day.

Reinventing the wheel all the time is not an ideal form ofgovernance. However remodeling systems, based on new realities is essential andglobal governance like our life itself should be forever evolving and adapting.New ways of global cooperation should be welcomed, and together we need to findways to refine these approaches and find complementary ways to integrate theminto a system of  global governance that isrobust and dynamic.  The One Belt OneRoad concept can be one such form of global cooperation, that can contribute torefining ways of global governance and providing a much needed framework on howcountries work with one another to achieve common and mutually beneficial ends, through means that are shared, win-win and respected by all sides.
